Salkantay (4 Days-3 Nights)

The Salkantay Trek is the most popular and challenging alternative to the Classic Inca Trail for reaching Machu Picchu. It is known for its spectacular scenic beauty and diverse ecosystems.

  • 🏔️Humantay Lagoon: A spectacular turquoise lagoon fed by snowmelt, often visited as a detour on the first day.
  • 🏔️Santa Teresa River Valley: Areas of lush vegetation, coffee plantations, and fruit orchards.
  • 🏔️Citadel Views: Some sections offer unique, distant views of Machu Picchu from angles different from the classic route.

The Salkantay Trek is an immersive nature experience, connecting the majesty of the high mountains with the exuberance of the rainforest, culminating in the reward of reaching Machu Picchu.

ITENERARIO

Alpine Zone: Very early morning pick-up in Cusco (4:00 AM). Transfer to Mollepata/Challacancha. Start of the trek. The afternoon includes an optional (but highly recommended) hike to the stunning Humantay Lagoon. Cool night in Soraypampa.

The Great Challenge: Waking up before dawn. A 3-4 hour ascent to the Salkantay Pass (the highest point). After taking photos of the snow-capped peaks, a long descent begins in the afternoon, transitioning from alpine scenery to cloud forest. Warmer night.

Descent into the Jungle: The day is long, but predominantly downhill, through plantations of coffee, bananas, and tropical fruits. Hike to the hydroelectric plant. From there, walk 2-3 hours along the train tracks to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). Overnight in a hostel.

The Summit: Very early ascent (4:30 AM) by bus or on foot to the entrance of Machu Picchu. Guided tour (3-4 hour circuit). In the afternoon, take the train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo or Poroy, followed by a bus transfer back to Cusco, arriving very late (approx. 10:00 PM).

recomendación

📄Acclimatization is Mandatory: Since Day 2 reaches an altitude of 4,635 meters above sea level, you must spend at least three full days in Cusco (3,400 meters above sea level) before starting the trek to reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

📄Physical Preparation: The four-day route is very demanding. Train with long, uphill hikes before your trip.

📄Day 3 is Key: Upon arriving at Hidroeléctrica, the 2-3 hour hike to Aguas Calientes is flat, but it comes after a long day. If you are very tired, consider taking a short train from Hidroeléctrica to Aguas Calientes to save your knees and time.

📄Hydration and Layering: Drink plenty of water or coca tea. Dress in layers (like an onion); you will go from sub-zero temperatures in the mountains to tropical heat in the jungle in just 24 hours. • Book Early: Especially if you are traveling during peak season, book your tour, train tickets, and Machu Picchu as far in advance as possible.

“Behind every image there is a conversation that taught us something, a scent that reminded us of childhood, and a sunset that made us feel insignificant and, at the same time, part of something immense. The true treasure is not the souvenirs, but the collection of memories that the passenger takes with them, now a narrator of their own adventure.”

“They say we travel three times: when we dream it, when we live it, and when we remember it. For the traveler who observes this gallery, the third time is the sweetest. Here lie the fragments of a time when the horizon was the only goal, and each unknown face became a brief but precious chapter in the infinite book of human adventure.”
