Choquequirao Trek 6 Days

Alternative to the Inca Trail, Choquequirao Trek to Machu Picchu is an impressive Inca citaplaced on the side of a mountain, It is made all the more special by its location – verlooking one of the deepest canyons in the world

Choquequirao is a challenging trek both due to the terrain and the hot climate. The standard length of the trek is 4 Days, but there is also the option to take it a little easier and do it in 5 days.

Day 1: Cusco – Capuliyoc – Chikiska – Playa Rosalinas.

We leave Cusco at 5am in a private van for a 4 hour drive to Capuliyoc, situated on the edge of the Apurimac Canyon and surrounded by impressive snowcapped peaks. Then we hike down for 2 hours until we arrive at Chikiska where we have lunch. Afterwards we continue our hike for 1 more hour to Playa Rosalinas (1550 metres/5084 feet), where we will spend the night.

Day 2: Playa Rosalinas – Maranpata – Choquequirao.

Departing early, we ascend to Santa Rosa and to Maranpata where we will have lunch. The climb from the river takes about 4 hours and is tough. From our lunch spot we can see the remains of Choquequirao. Then we have 2 more hours to hike to reach the Choquequirao Archeological site (3110 metres/10120 feet). We spend the evening there and get to watch the sunset and some condors flying.

Day 3: Choquequirao – Rio Blanco – Maizal.

we leave early for the short climb to the pass. Then it is downhill 1400m (4600ft) past the recently discovered ruins of Pincha Unuyoc to the Rio Blanco where you can dip your feet in the cool waters. Just beware of the biting sand-flies. Known as “Pumahuacachi” their name means “makes the puma cry”. Here lunch Refreshed, you climb steeply again, 1,200m (3900ft) to the small and beautifully located campsite of Maizal at an altitude of 3,000m (9840ft). This is probably the toughest day of the trip but if you have prepared well and are determined, you will succeed. Te time and dinner campsite. Full day

Day 4: Maizal – Yanama – Totora – Santa Treresa. (drive)

You leave camp behind and climb past old silver mines to the highest pass of the trip. Abra San Juan at 4,000m (13123ft) affords spectacular views of the Cordillera Vilcabamba mountain range. Here we are going to take our lunch

You then take a delightful and at times precipitous path down to the charming Andean village of Yanama. Here you say goodbye to your muleteers and climb aboard the waiting vehicle for the spectacular drive on dirt road over the Totora pass to the small hamlet of Lucmabamba and finally Santa Teresa. 4:30 hours by bus We can go to take shower and enjoy the hotspring cocalmayo.

Day 5: Santa Teresa – Aguas Calientes.

After the breakfast, we are going to take a bus to hidrolectrica half hour.
If you will want to make zipline in santa teresa you can do it about 2 hours zipline and transportation to hidrolectrica, here lunch.
After we pass this small Inca site we will reach the train rails. Next to the rails there is a nice path to walk on; this path will take us approximately 3 hours. After the 3 hours we will arrive at Aguas Calientes, which is located at the foot of Machu Picchu. This section is very interesting because it is the trail that was used by the American Professor Hiram Bingham who rediscovered Machu Picchu after centuries of it being lost.

Day 6: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco.

We will have breakfast at 5am and take the first bus to Machu Picchu, just in time for sunrise. It will take half an hour to reach the Machu Picchu archeological site, one of the 7 New Wonders of the World and UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site: an unforgettable experience you will never forget. Your guide will expertly direct you through the astounding vestiges and its main streets. After the guided tour, you will have some free time to wander around the town squares as well as to do some of the following activities on your own:
Climb up Huayna Picchu and appreciate the beauty and magnificence of Machu Picchu from there
Climb Machu Picchu Mountain and appreciate the beauty and magnificence of Machu Picchu from there
Walk to the Sun Gate or Inti Punku
Visit the new local museum or the hot springs in Aguas Calientes later in the day.
Then you will descend to Aguas Calientes, enjoy a leisurely lunch, and at 6:20pm, you will board the train for the return trip to Cusco.


NOTE OF Wayna Picchu: The entrance to Wayna Picchu must confirm at the time of making your reservation and is subject to availability of seats. (maximum 400 seats per day)

What to bring:

  • Long- and short-sleeved polo’s/T-Shirts.
  • Rainponcho cold and sun hat.
  • Bathing suit (for the hot springs in Aguas Calientes).
  • Sunscreen, insect repellent, disinfecting alcohol and gel, water bottle and sterilizing tablets, toiletries and toilet paper.
  • Camera (wrapped in plastic bag), a flash light and batteries.
  • Some snacks like chocolate bars and dry fruit.
  • Original passport, original ISIC student card
  • Extra money in soles (s/ 400.00 soles) emergency case and tips.
  • Since the weather can be very cold and mostly, your clothes – once gotten wet – won’t dry at night. So take some clothes to change.
